Technical overview
Oil-Immersed Split-Winding Transformer

Overview

Split-winding transformers are increasingly used to limit short-circuit current and save investment. Because breaker interrupting capacity is limited, station-service transformers of large power stations supply two branches, so split transformers are widely used there.

The low-voltage winding is split into several branches of equal capacity with no electrical connection and only weak magnetic coupling between them.

Design and performance

Main features

Three operating modes
Through, half-through and split operation.
Two split methods
Radial split and axial split.
Fault ride-through
When one LV branch is short-circuited, the other can still run at close to 90% voltage.
Economy
Low manufacturing cost and smaller volume for the same capacity.
